Explore the heartland of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc - where scenes from The Hobbit were filmed!
Where is it?
What are the main grapes grown?
Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Sauvignon Blanc! To be fair, other varietals such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are grown, but SB casts a long shadow in terms of global marketing.
What is distinctive about it?
It is one of the sunniest parts of NZ with moderate temperatures and protection from rain and wind. Its extensive river systems have produced soil deposits with an ancient history.
The SB here is a brand in its own right: pungent and aromatic with both herbaceous and exotic tropical tastes and aromas.

How do you spot a good bottle?
There’s no official classification system, but the price is a reasonable indicator. Cheap NZ SB is cheap NZ SB! There are a few commercial producers, but still many family-owned properties – you can find that out on the back label.

What are its classic dishes?
The country is most famous for its lamb, but being two small islands, the fish and seafood are also great. NZ SB loves a lightly grilled white fish!
